Baccarat's Banker Wager Carries Lowest House Edge Among Main Bets
In punto banco, the standard form of baccarat, the banker bet has the smallest house edge of the three options, while the tie bet sits in a different category entirely.

Baccarat, in its most widely played form known as punto banco, offers gamblers three wagers on each hand: player, banker, and tie. Each carries a different house edge, and the gap between them is large.
According to Wikipedia, the player bet carries a house edge of 1.24%. The banker bet is lower still, at 1.06%, once the standard 5% commission casinos charge on winning banker bets is factored in.
That commission exists because the banker position in punto banco wins slightly more often than the player position over the long run. Casinos claw back a cut of banker winnings to correct for that edge, which is what pulls the banker bet's house edge below the player bet's.
The tie bet works on entirely different mathematics. It pays 8-to-1 when both hands finish with equal totals, an outcome far rarer than a player or banker win. Wikipedia states this produces a house edge of 14.4%, more than ten times that of the banker bet.
Some casinos, particularly in the United Kingdom, pay the tie bet at 9-to-1 instead of 8-to-1. That improves the payout enough to bring the house edge down to approximately 4.85%, still well above either of the other two wagers.
A house edge is a long-run figure, calculated as the casino's expected profit expressed as a percentage of the amount wagered. It describes what happens on average across a very large number of hands, not what will happen in any single session, where either outcome remains possible regardless of which bet is chosen.
Variants of the game adjust these figures further. In the Super 6 version of mini-baccarat, winning banker bets are paid even money rather than the usual 95%, except when the banker wins with a six, which pays only half the stake. Wikipedia reports this raises the banker bet's house edge to 1.46%, compared with 1.058% under standard commission baccarat, equivalent to lifting the effective commission to 5.87%.
EZ-baccarat takes a different approach, paying even money on both banker and player wins except when the banker wins with a three-card total of seven, which pushes rather than pays. That variant adds side bets, Dragon 7 and Panda 8, paying 40-to-1 and 25-to-1 respectively on specific three-card outcomes.
None of these structures change the basic pattern: punto banco's banker and player bets rank among the lower house edges found in casino table games generally, while the tie bet behaves more like a long-shot side wager, with a payout and probability that sit far apart from the other two options on the table.
Punto banco is, as Wikipedia notes, a game of pure chance, meaning no sequence of bets or staking pattern changes the underlying probabilities behind any of these three outcomes.
