Greentube: differentiation vital as North American slots markets saturate

Ahead of G2E, Greentube's Markus Antl tells SBC Americas that standing out in crowded US and Canadian casino lobbies now depends on games built specifically for local players rather than European ports.

Greentube's Director of Global Sales and Marketing, Markus Antl, has told SBC Americas that differentiation has become one of the biggest determinants of success for slot suppliers in North America's most competitive online casino markets.

Speaking ahead of the supplier's appearance at G2E, Antl said the sheer number of separate jurisdictions across the United States and Canada means the region cannot be treated as a single market. Greentube currently operates in states including New Jersey, Michigan, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware, alongside Ontario, the newly opened Alberta market, and provincial platforms in British Columbia and Quebec.

According to Antl, each jurisdiction has its own player base, competitive landscape and regulatory requirements, so opportunity has to be assessed market by market rather than added up as one combined total. He added that shared language and broadly similar player preferences across the US and Canada do make it easier to scale tailored game launches once they prove successful in one state or province.

On Alberta, which opened earlier this year, Antl said the market has reinforced rather than reshaped Greentube's existing North American approach, since the supplier was able to extend a portfolio and partnerships already established in Ontario. He said Greentube is still analysing early activity to understand player behaviour in the province and expects the market to evolve as it matures.

Antl said Greentube's game development has shifted from adapting titles built for European players towards building content specifically for North American audiences. He pointed to the fact that many North American players first encounter online casino through the same operator apps or land-based brands that brought them into sports betting, meaning familiarity and app-based convenience carry particular weight.

On standing out in saturated markets such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ontario, Antl said Greentube's strategy centres on building recognisable game families alongside strategically developed standalone titles, so that players build trust and recognition across multiple releases. He said raising the quality bar on every release, rather than simply porting existing titles across, is central to that approach heading into 2027.

Antl also stressed the importance of operator partnerships, noting that trust and long-term collaboration are what allow a supplier to introduce new content into competitive lobbies in the first place. He said relationships already built in other markets can reduce the groundwork needed to enter a new one, but that strategic growth in North America requires both existing ties and new ones.

Asked how operators should approach growth where the addressable market in a single state remains small, Antl said the priority should be retention and lifetime value rather than new player acquisition alone, alongside close collaboration with operators on how content is merchandised within the lobby.

Looking ahead, Antl described the 12-month outlook for the US and Canada as positive, citing Maine as a state close to advancing iGaming legislation, and naming Illinois, New York, Maryland and Louisiana as likely future candidates given their existing gaming or sports betting markets.
