PrizePicks has moved into the pack opening and trading card market with the rollout of PrizePicks Packs, a digital rips product that lets customers open card packs online, EGR reports.

Packs covering basketball, American football and Pokémon are already live, according to screenshots shared on X by Aldrin Research. Prices range from $1 to several thousand dollars.

Each digital pack corresponds to a physical pack held by the platform. Once a customer opens a pack, they can choose to have the card shipped to them or sell it back to PrizePicks for what the company calls "fair market value".

Before opening a pack, users are shown the odds and value of the cards it could contain. Pulls are assigned through randomised allocation, and all cards are authenticated and held by PrizePicks on the customer's behalf.

An online article describing the launch said digital rips bring "that energy of ripping a pack online from the comfort of your phone, without the extra hassle", adding that the cards pulled are real, "just like pulling from a physical pack".

PrizePicks' terms of service frame the product as an ecommerce offering rather than a gambling product. The terms state that purchases are "a retail purchase of repacked physical collectible trading cards for a disclosed price, containing contents within a reasonable range of value relative to that price", and that users agree the activity does not constitute gambling, wagering, a lottery or a game of chance.

Minimum age requirements vary by state, set at either 18, 19 or 21, and customers must be physically located in that state when they make a deposit or purchase.

The launch follows Allwyn's acquisition of a majority stake in PrizePicks last year, after which the UK National Lottery operator oversaw the daily fantasy sports firm's expansion into prediction markets.

PrizePicks Packs arrives as digital rips become one of the fastest-growing segments across the DFS and prediction markets space. Underdog launched Underdog Rips at the start of September, offering mystery packs priced between $5 and $1,000 in every US state except Nevada.

Fanatics also runs a digital rips product, though it sits apart from its main sports betting, gaming and predictions app. Jake Paul-founded Betr has said it plans to add digital rips as part of a wider Super App expansion that will also include predictions, sweeps and arcade games.

Rips by Triumph has been cited as one of the platforms leading the sector's recent growth, with PrizePicks now the latest major operator to follow that model into trading cards.
